SCRAPING BY: Financial Hardship for People with Disabilities

October 12, 2022 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Event Navigation

Longstanding discriminatory policies/practices related to education, housing, employment and healthcare have created economic inequality and financial instability for many, including people with disabilities and people of color. Using the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), 18% of people with disabilities in the U.S. lived in poverty in 2019, but this is a dramatic undercount. Another 34% were also struggling, in households that earned above the FPL but less than what it costs to afford the basics. United Way coined the term ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) to describe families who are struggling to make ends meet.

This webinar will introduce you to United Way’s ALICE in Focus project that uses publicly available data to illustrate financial hardship among people with disabilities, and then to advocate for policies that would close the gap, supporting disabled families to gain financial stability. Join us to better understand the powerful tools available to help you make the case for targeted interventions.
