SUMMARY:Every Child Belongs: Using Trauma-Informed Strategies to Stop Exclusion for Preschoolers
DESCRIPTION:Preschoolers often show big feelings and behaviors as they learn to manage their emotions and be with others. Sometimes\, these behaviors can be misunderstood in school settings and lead to exclusion\, such as children being left out\, suspended\, or expelled. Over time\, repeated exclusion can set children on a path toward long-term school struggles — a pattern often called the preschool-to-prison pipeline.  This training helps families understand why these behaviors happen\, how stress and trauma can affect preschoolers\, and what parents and caregivers can do to support their children’s growth and inclusion. Participants will learn practical\, trauma-informed strategies to respond to big emotions at home and to work with teachers and schools in strength-based ways. Together\, we’ll explore how connection\, communication\, and understanding can create safe\, supportive learning environments where every child can thrive.  After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. For accommodations\, please email denise.beckett@temple.edu one week before the session date.

SUMMARY:Advocacy: They Have It\, You Want It — Now What?
DESCRIPTION:When your child is perceived to look or behave in a way that brings unwanted attention from others and sometimes elicits words that are insensitive and hurtful\, it can be quite uncomfortable. Let’s share strategies to educate\, sensitize and react to these experiences. How we respond is a choice and every situation is unique as is every family. This session will offer options to respond to these situations as well as encourage participants to share strategies that they have utilized.

SUMMARY:Restraint and Seclusion in Schools: What You Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:Learn why restraint and seclusion are dangerous\, traumatizing practices—and what Pennsylvania families and advocates can do to reduce and eliminate their use in schools. This session with Guy Stephens\, Founder and Executive Director of the Alliance Against Seclusion and Restraint\, will explore how these practices disproportionately impact disabled\, neurodivergent\, Black and Brown students and contribute to long-term trauma and the school-to-prison pipeline. Participants will gain practical strategies to advocate for trauma-informed\, neuroscience-aligned\, neurodiversity-affirming\, relationship-driven\, and collaborative supports\, understand when restraint is (and is not) allowed under state laws\, and learn concrete steps to take if their child is restrained or secluded\, including how to work with schools and where to find advocacy help.

SUMMARY:The Stress of Caring for a Child with a Disability: Strategies for Stress Reduction
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will share strategies to help you say what you need to say\, and do what you need to do in order to find\, apply for and obtain what is needed for your family member with a disability and for your whole family as well. When your child was diagnosed with a disability the roller coaster journey began with terminology you might not have known\, systems and services that were new to you and sometimes\, a competition to get them for your child and family. We all have different strengths and abilities. Advocating to obtain what is important for your child and family is always critically important during this journey. Join us as I share my 50+ years of advocacy strategies as well as welcoming you to share your own techniques of getting what is needed to support your child’s maximum growth and development.
