SUMMARY:The Camera’s Eye: Telling the Story of Disability through the Power of Film
DESCRIPTION:Before his son Samuel Habib was diagnosed with a disability at age 1\, Dan Habib rarely thought about the inclusion of people with disabilities. Since then\, he and his family have advocated for Samuel’s inclusion nearly every day – in their schools\, city\, college\, and even in their extended family. \nSamuel (24)\, who was featured in his father Dan’s seminal 2008 film “Including Samuel\,” is now leading the advocacy charge for his own life. \nSamuel and Dan will share several films – including their Emmy Award Winning film\, My Disability Roadmap – and discuss their strategies for creating a culture of inclusion in the family\, school district\, and community\, and plan for a full adult life. Their films vividly document inclusive practices such as universal design for learning\, assistive technology\, positive behavioral supports\, family engagement\, youth leadership\, and cultural responsiveness. \nCaptioned and ASL interpretation will be provided for this webinar. Please email info@wpdhac.org if you require any additional accommodations.

SUMMARY:End Subminimum Wage Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Despite decades of progress for disability employment protections and civil rights\, it is still legal to pay people with disabilities less than minimum wage. Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act has allowed employers to pay disabled workers subminimum wage for close to 90 years. Recent data has shown that disabled employees working under a 14(c) certificate earned an average of $3.34 per hour with many workers making even less than this. The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD)\, The Autistic Self Advocacy Network\, and The National Council on Independent Living are hosting a webinar to discuss and educate the public on why advocacy is necessary to end this harmful practice.

SUMMARY:2024 Disability Health Action Summit
DESCRIPTION:The theme of the day will be Advancing Health Equity for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. \nPeople with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have long been experiencing health disparities. With the  COVID-19 pandemic came worsened health outcomes for people with IDD. It also brought needed attention and funds to research the emerging health disparities. The Arc of Pennsylvania received funds through the Pennsylvania Department of Health to do just that. The results of the three-year long project are what prompted this summit. Years of previous research was further reinforced by findings from the Arc of PA’s Initiative to Address COVID-19 Health Disparities Among People with Disabilities. The need for a conference dedicated exclusively to addressing health equity for people with IDD became apparent. \nThis conference addresses four areas: (1) Education of Medical Professionals\, (2) Elevating the Voices of Self Advocates\, (3) Policy Changes\, and (4) Advancing Dental Care. \nThis is an in-person only event at the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey hotel\, with no option to attend or present virtually. \nCost is $75; Self advocates attend for free
