SUMMARY:The Future of Disability Rights with Ted Kennedy\, Jr. - Pittsburgh
DESCRIPTION:No mission of Dick and Ginny Thornburgh’s is more important than expanding public understanding\, institutional services and protections\, and political voice of people with disabilities.  The impacts across our nation are well known and far-reaching. Many Americans are touched themselves with a disability\, a chronic condition or are closely acquainted with such a person. Not least among those affected are the many brave soldiers wounded in our battles abroad. \nA pediatric bone cancer survivor and amputee\, Mr. Kennedy has been an active leader in the movement to expand opportunities for persons with disabilities. In June 2017\, Mr. Kennedy was elected Chair of the Board of the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD)\, one of the country’s preeminent civil rights and public policy organizations dedicated to social reform and equal rights for people with disabilities. He also advises employers on best practices and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). One of AAPD’s signature programs is the Disability Equality Index (DEI)\, now the nation’s leading corporate benchmarking tool for disability equality and inclusion. The DEI scores and tracks businesses on their disability employment\, accommodation policies and socially responsible corporate practices. Mr. Kennedy is a member of the firm in the Health Care and Life Sciences practice at Epstein Becker Green. \nThe annual lectures are free\, open-to-the-public events that draw a large and diverse audience of students\, professors\, attorneys\, advocates\, community leaders\, and national spokespersons for the rights of people with disabilities. \nParking is suggested at Soldiers and Sailor Parking garage. \nThis lecture is free and open to the public. \nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

SUMMARY:Building Community through Social Capital
DESCRIPTION:All individuals with disabilities and their family members (as well as professionals who are involved with the family) are interested in seeing themselves or their son/daughter/relative be successful in life. In fact\, one of the biggest fear individuals and families have is that their loved one might be lonely or at serious risk when they are gone. Although none of us can predict the future\, we can look at ways and means to better prepare for the future by understanding the impact of friendships in our lives. Sociologists call this “social capital” and it is amazing what our relationships do for us. This session will help you think about how friendships can be better developed over time\, and\, in turn\, build a more inclusive community. \n  \nFor questions or registration assistance please contact Jessica Stover at 570.495.3537 or http://www.networksfortraining.org

SUMMARY:2019 Mini Course/Lecture Series on Disabilities: One Day the World Will Be A Perfect Place: Toolbox for Change - Glen Mills
DESCRIPTION:The Institute on Disabilities at Temple University hosts guest speakers and lecturers several times each year for its Mini Course/Lecture Series on Disabilities. How does a traditional organization move towards person-centered supports? How do caregivers maintain their sense of purpose\, joy\, and commitment in times of growing complexity and changing expectations? A day-long workshop focused on specific strategies for transforming system-centered organizations to person- and family-centered organizations while never losing track of joy. David Pitonyak is the Director of Imagine. He provides consultation to individuals who experience disabilities\, their families\, and their paid support workers throughout North America. The foundation of David’s work is that we are social beings. Our happiness depends on the development of enduring and positive relationships.

SUMMARY:2019 Mini Course/Lecture Series on Disabilities: The Importance of Belonging - Glen Mills
DESCRIPTION:The Institute on Disabilities at Temple University hosts guest speakers and lecturers several times each year for its Mini Course/Lecture Series on Disabilities. Being connected to the people we love is critical to our emotional and physical well-being. Many people experiencing our services are sick from loneliness. This workshop is about ideas for moving beyond interventions and coverage to a system that supports enduring\, freely chosen relationships.  David Pitonyak is the Director of Imagine. He provides consultation to individuals who experience disabilities\, their families\, and their paid support workers throughout North America. The foundation of David’s work is that we are social beings. Our happiness depends on the development of enduring and positive relationships.
