Harrisburg, PA – March 18, 2014 – The Pennsylvania State Senate last week adopted a resolution to honor the work of the Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council (PADDC). Developmental Disability Councils in each state were first authorized and funded in the Federal Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act passed in 1963, up until the most recent reauthorization in the year 2000.
“The PADDC and staff are honored to be recognized by the Senate through the passage of this resolution. We consider it a great honor to work toward the vision of a Commonwealth where quality of life and fulfillment of dreams are attainable by everyone,” said Nancy Richey of Mechanicsburg, Chairperson of the Council. In its 40th year of operations, the PADDC has promoted, funded and championed many issues, including attendant-care programs; self-determined housing initiatives; family support legislation; permanency planning and the statewide adoption system; shared-ride transportation; training in disability issues for teachers, physicians, dentists and other health care staff; entrepreneurship and other employment opportunities; independent citizen monitoring of the formal service system; and community supports for medically fragile children.
In its proclamation, the Senate resolved to, “recognize the Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council and honor the Council for working to improve the lives of people with developmental disabilities and, in doing so, the lives of all Pennsylvanians.”
